Japan’s Global Health Strategy and the 2023 G7 Hiroshima Summit

  • Daisuke Akimoto

摘要

On May 19–21, 2023, the Japanese government hosted the G7 Hiroshima Summit. Alongside several global issues, attentions were paid to “global health” at the summit in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. How has Japan been committed to the G7/G8 summits as a host nation for the sake of global health? This chapter intends to provide an overview of Japan’s Global Health Strategy announced by the Kishida administration in May 2022, which became a foundation for Japan’s human security diplomacy toward the G7 Hiroshima Summit. Next, it examines the significance of Japan’s summit diplomacy for global health by contextualizing Japan’s summit diplomacy from the 2000 G8 Kyushu-Okinawa Summit to the 2023 G7 Hiroshima Summit. Finally, this chapter considers policy implications of the G7 Hiroshima Summit for Japan’s global health policy during the COVID-19 period.
