Exploring Assistive Technology for Students with Disabilities in Higher Education

Assistive technology (AT) consists of adaptive and rehabilitative devices to aid students with disabilities and the elderly to learn, communicate, or function better. The assistive technology helps students with disabilities to become more independent, develop their academic skills, and benefit from transition programs. The assistive technology strengthens students’ overall education and job opportunity tasks, completing challenging academic activities and improving their involvement in classroom discussions. However, assistive technology is underutilized for students with special needs. Assistive technologies have the potential to transform into learning technologies, giving students more control over their preferred study methods, surroundings, and styles. It discusses role of assistive technology in special education by compiling pertinent sources from databases on the web, journals, and other trustworthy resources. The utilization of assistive technologies and assistive technology implementation strategies are the two main areas of the analysis. This paper shows the challenges and need of integration of AT in education of students with disabilities. It emphasizes the value of using assistive technology to improve a student’s independence, academic ability, and overall educational experience. The application of assistive technology can be improved, which will ultimately improve learning results as well as opportunities for learners with disabilities.
