Comparative Study of Moodie Young’s Method and Largest Candidate Rule in Assembly Line Balancing
摘要
Assembly line balancing (ALB) plays a major role in industrial engineering. It distributes equal loads among different workstations thus reducing idle time and bottlenecks and helps in increasing line efficiency. Bottlenecks are mainly caused due to differences in the cycle time of different work-stations of the assembly. Bottlenecks result in delayed product completion time. The present study mainly focuses on the comparison of two methods for line balancing namely Moodie Young’s method and Largest Candidate Rule (LCR) of assembling pix cassette panels manufacturing industry. Initially the existing assembly line efficiency was 48.96%, idle time was 51.04% and cycle time was 120 min. Company was initially 7 workstations having different cycle time. Therefore, company need to balance their assembly lines to increase their productivity to meet the required demand. The no. of workstations reduced from 7 to 6 after applying LCR and Moodie Young Method. Line efficiency increased from 48.96 to 97.3% and hence reduction in balance delay. Smoothness Index for Moodie Young Method is found to be 6.87 min while for LCR Method it is 8.09 min. It is concluded that for this manufacturing process industry also Moodie Young Method can be applied to improve their assembly line. It will result in decrease in labour cost and increase financial benefits of the organizations.
