Membrane technology, a long-established field with a proven track record over several years, is now facing the imperative for process intensification, prompting the need for innovative approaches. Process intensification can be achieved through the hybridization of adsorptive membrane filtration technologies. Adsorption, defined as the accumulation of liquid on a solid substrate, becomes a pivotal element in this quest, aiming to optimize water recovery while minimizing energy consumption. However, the specific treatment requirements vary significantly based on the water source and intended application. In this context, the pursuit of a selective membrane that effectively retards salt ions while efficiently rejecting hazardous impurities takes center stage. The enhanced adsorptive efficiency of biochar is attributed to its remarkably high specific surface area, corresponding sorption sites, and a concise intraparticle diffusion pathway. The integration of biochar into a mixed matrix membrane not only boosts adsorption capabilities but also enhances separation efficiency. Anticipating the next generation of contaminant removal technology, a hybrid system designed for process intensification emerges as a promising solution. By integrating two or more treatment processes into a cascading hybrid unit, this approach efficiently addresses emerging water contaminants. It leverages the unique strengths of each process, working synergistically to enhance overall contaminant removal efficiency.
