Childhood Resilience and Vulnerabilities: Prevention and Promotion of Health
摘要
It is a mammoth task to build resilience in children the world over without addressing the social determinants of health, particularly poverty and environmental risks. Children, including adolescents, are exposed to violence, trauma, pandemics (e.g., COVID-19), and natural and man-made disasters; therefore, they need resilience to develop typically. The focus should be on prevention, early detection, intervention, and management of developmental, behavioral, and psychosocial problems to enhance adaptability and well-being among children as a form of health promotion. This chapter explores risk factors that may cause vulnerability in children, including crime vulnerability. Additionally, types of interventions that lead to resilience to promote health, for instance, individual and family-level interventions and community, cultural, and social environmental interventions, are identified. Policy formulators and practitioners, including other stakeholders, should draw on previous findings to build coping-enabling social environments, thereby presenting vulnerable children with greater opportunity to actively deal with challenges and work toward a more fulfilling future with better well-being and resilience skills.
