Mindfulness and Well-Being
摘要
Mindfulness practice can be traced back to ancient religions, but within the comparatively brief history of science, systematic research on mindfulness only emerged fairly recently. Within a very short period of time, mindfulness research has grown to such an extent that it can now boast a respectable body of literature. Much of the early success was due to the ability of researchers to demonstrate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions for a range of different health conditions, which subsequently sparked research interest in broader topics including the role of mindfulness in generating and maintaining general well-being. Although research consistently supports the connection between mindfulness and well-being, the demonstration of the robustness of these findings requires the field of mindfulness research to address several ongoing challenges. One of the key issues facing mindfulness research is the need for greater conceptual clarity. Mindfulness has been variously defined as a state, a trait, a skill, and a practice. This lack of uniformity or the absence of a sufficiently sophisticated terminology complicates efforts to synthesize research findings and develop coherent theoretical frameworks. Furthermore, advancing the field of mindfulness and well-being requires the development of more rigorous research designs and psychometrically robust measurement tools. Addressing these challenges is vital for the continued growth in sophistication of mindfulness research, ensuring its relevance and applicability in enhancing human well-being.
