Self-Compassion, Health, and Eating Behavior Change
摘要
This chapter introduces the concept of self-compassion, which involves treating oneself with kindness, acknowledging shared humanity, and maintaining mindfulness during challenging times. It explores the broad impact of self-compassion, emphasizing its significant effects on mental health, resilience, and physical health, including eating behaviors. Research and empirical findings consistently demonstrate that cultivating self-compassion contributes to overall well-being and positive behavioral changes. More specifically, the chapter discusses how self-compassion is shown to enhance psychological health by reducing negative emotions, improving emotion regulation, and increasing positive emotions, which help buffer against anxiety, stress, and depression. Interventions promoting self-compassion, such as the Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program, also foster resilience and support recovery during times of distress. The relationship between self-compassion and physical health highlights its positive association with health-promoting behaviors, such as healthy eating, exercise, and stress management. The evidence overwhelmingly supports the benefits of self-compassion across various health outcomes. However, the chapter also acknowledges the complexity of self- compassion’s impact on eating behaviors, where self-kindness can lead to both positive and negative outcomes. It presents a case where the need for further research to refine self-compassion interventions may ensure they effectively promote mental and physical well-being simultaneously. The chapter also proposes non-meditative practices and scale development as newer methods of future-proofing research and practices on self-compassion for health. By integrating self-compassion into therapeutic practices, following the recommendations of this chapter, there is potential for significant public health benefits and improvements in clinical practice for different health domains and evidence-informed behavior change.
