This chapter reviews of research on social networks, supportive communication, and health outcomes. It examines previous scholarship on the influence of social networks (online and face-to-face) on people’s health attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, as well as different characteristics of social networks that can be both beneficial and detrimental to health, such as reinforcement of positive and negative health behaviors. Moreover, the chapter explores research on both positive and negative aspects of social networks on health with a specific focus on relational communication concerns within social networks related to receiving and providing adequate social support for individuals facing health concerns. In addition, the chapter examines research that has used social networks approaches to health interventions. Finally, the chapter explores the role of social networks in the spread and acceptance of health misinformation.
