Change is the only constant in people’s lives, and how that change occurs will differ from person to person by their life situations, affecting their health and well-being. The changes people seek and pursue their life situations are important to their health and well-being. With health and well-being, people can be what they could be, transforming their lives. Transformative health approaches by and for people in their life situations improve their health and well-being across their life span. Yet, most health systems aim to assist people in achieving short-term changes that ameliorate their symptoms of distress, with little regard in changing people’s all life situations for their improved health and well-being. This chapter outlines the nature of transformative health approaches by the types of change people seek for their health and well-being, self-managing their life situations with meaning or purpose, and distress relief. The chapter presents a conceptual model of the types and levels of changes people seek for their health and well-being. In doing so, the chapter defines components of changes in health and well-being for transformed or improved health outcomes. It then considers theoretical frameworks for transformative health approaches, explaining health outcomes people seek and can achieve with their participation. Next, the chapter discusses the processes and tools of transformative health approaches across life domains. The chapter then considers ethics on transformative health approaches and their implementation with cultural safety and security. Finally, the chapter considers issues for research and other formal scholarship applying transformative health approaches for improving people’s lives based on their capabilities and partnerships for the healthy lives they aspire.
