Dairy cattle nutrition involves a complex interplay of physiological processes, where the harmonious co-existence of health and productivity holds paramount importance. Among these multi-faceted mechanisms, the pivotal role of rumen buffers emerges as a cornerstone, ensuring the well-being and performance of ruminants by optimisation of rumen fermentation. Buffers act as dynamic regulators, being instrumental in maintaining the delicate equilibrium between ruminal acidity and alkalinity, whilst also simultaneously nurturing a conducive habitat for the proliferation of beneficial microbiota. The selection of an appropriate buffering agent is contingent upon a nuanced consideration of factors including dietary composition, specificity, buffering kinetics and consequential influences on systemic electrolyte equilibrium. Diverse buffering agents such as sodium bicarbonate, sodium sesquicarbonate, magnesium oxide, calcium carbonate, sodium bentonite and calcified seaweed, have been introduced into the ration of dairy animals to enhance both performance outcomes as well as overall health status. Rigorous analytical methodologies employing mixed model statistical analyses have illuminated the substantial beneficial effects associated with the supplementation of sodium bicarbonate on the performance profiles of early- and mid-lactation dairy cows fed on maize silage-based diets. Further, it is emphasised to incorporate buffers into the diet at levels of 0.6–0.8% of dry matter intake or 1.2–1.6% of a concentrated mixture in ruminants. This chapter encompasses rumen buffers, exploring their diverse sources, mechanisms and implications for the overall health and productivity of ruminants.
