Feed Additives for Calves: A Brief Insight on Their Classification and Applications

Calf-hood diseases cause a huge economic loss in cattle farming because of diminished performance, treatment costs, and direct calf losses. Feed additives—as a part of balanced calf diets—may reduce the morbidity and mortality of calves, thus promoting the economic viability of cattle operations. Based on the function and modes of action, feed additives are broadly classified into technological, sensory, nutritional, zoo-technical, and coccidiostats along with various sub-categories. This chapter aims to present a holistic overview of feed additives employed in calf nutrition for realizing success in calf rearing.
