Study on Economic and Technological Feasibility of Solar PV-Powered Desalination Plant at Chinna Rushikonda, Visakhapatnam

Water has become a valuable commodity in India. The country has 18% of the world's population but just 4% of its water resources, making it one of the world's most water-stressed. According to a recent assessment by the NITI Aayog, a substantial proportion of Indians endure high to extreme water stress. One of the solutions is to create awareness of water conversation and identify new ways of recycling the water. Desalinating the seawater can be a good option as India has a 7516.6-km-long coastline, which touches 13 states and union territories. This paper seeks to comprehend the viability of a solar PV-powered desalination plant in Chinna Rushikonda, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. This study helps understand the economic needs and technical requirements to arrange a desalination plant at the location. For this study, three different rating desalination plants and four different rating solar PV modules are selected, which are available in the Indian market. The report also describes the economic analysis, which includes calculating the life cycle cost and payback periods.
