PV-STATCOM in Distribution System

Power from different renewable energy sources is heavily penetrated in the existing power grid to minimize the gap between power generation and load demand. Power from solar energy contributes the major part in renewable energy generation. In solar-powered PV system, inverter converts DC to AC and feeds to the AC grid in the daytime when sunrays are available. But in the nighttime, inverter is unutilized (Varma and Siavashi in IEEE Trans Sustain Energy 9(4), 2018 [1]). This paper presents the smart solar PV inverters for voltage control in the distribution system. Solar inverter penetrates active power in the daytime and it acts like STATCOM in the nighttime. It is called as PV-STATCOM. In this paper PV-STATCOM is demonstrated in daytime and nighttime application. A MATLAB simulation of PV-STATCOM is presented and a control scheme is developed for daytime and nighttime PV-STATCOM operation.
