On-Site Safety Knowledge Sharing Flow in Construction Project: A Case Study in Indonesia

The construction industry, particularly in Indonesia, faces challenges related to accidents and safety. The critical role of personnel safety concerns in the construction industry makes it imperative to undertake studies that specifically address the safety issues confronting construction workers. Such research is regarded as a vital component contributing to the attainment of high production efficiency within the construction industry. Previous studies show that a primary causal factor of construction accidents is the lack of proper safety knowledge sharing. Although some studies have explored safety knowledge management, a handful of research investigated on-site safety knowledge sharing among workers, especially in Indonesia. To address the gap, this study aims to investigate on-site safety knowledge sharing in construction projects. Interaction patterns of safety knowledge sharing in two construction projects were analyzed using social network analysis (SNA). The finding revealed the need to optimize the safety officer and peer supervisor’s roles in construction projects. The finding also strengthens the previous study that significant amounts of implicit knowledge were shared via solid ties in sparse networks. It is expected that by employing SNA to map safety knowledge sharing process will assist construction firms in strengthening their networks, hence improving a safer construction industry and enhancing project success.
