Building Guidelines for Cyclonic Flood-Affected Homes in Coastal Regions of Sunderbans

This research investigates the consistent loss of habitats in the Sunderbans mangroves, particularly in the Indian Territory, due to yearly cyclonic disturbances and flooding events. These hydrometeorological catastrophes impact a staggering 2.3 billion people globally, with Asia housing 97% of the affected population. Each year, the coastline witnesses substantial damages to traditionally built, non-engineered homes. This study endeavors to identify a housing design that not only resists high-wind speeds but is also economically viable for inhabitants. We collected and examined data from residences in Basanti, Gosaba, and Patharpratima districts in the Sunderbans, India, to discern prevalent housing designs. While some homes were found lacking in construction quality, others, though adequately built, did not incorporate standard engineering practices. These latter homes were considered for potential modifications to endure the Bay of Bengal’s notorious winds. Our analysis revealed that incorporating elementary reinforcement methods, like the addition of specific ties and bracing, could decrease deflections by nearly 95%. Furthermore, this document provides building recommendations tailored for areas susceptible to cyclones. This comprehensive approach presents a strategy for developing homes that are both environmentally sustainable and resilient to the challenges of flood-prone locales.
