Enhancing Rainfall Estimation Accuracy Through Merging GPM-IMERG Satellite Data with Ground Observation in Jabodetabek

Rainfall measurement is vital for various applications, including aviation and marine, and is typically performed using instruments such as rain gauges and satellites. However, these instruments possess inherent disadvantages that can introduce uncertainty or bias. This research aims to overcome these limitations by integrating satellite-based rainfall estimation data (specifically GPM-IMERG) with conventional rain gauge data from different observation stations in the Jabodetabek area, using the Mean Field Bias (MFB) correction method. Conducted during the peak rainy season from December 2020 to February 2021, this study demonstrates that merging these two data types significantly reduces rainfall estimation error by 87% in the region. The wide range of error reduction indicates varying success across different conditions, warranting further investigation. Nonetheless, the MFB method’s application results in more precise estimates in both location and rainfall intensity, paving the way for improved weather predictions and decision-making in critical especially in terms of the location and rainfall intensity.
