摘要

Sustainable development (SD) has emerged as a new goal for international development in the wake of a number of changing environmental, social and economic conditions. The goal of sustainability is to balance human life on earth without sacrificing the vital natural resources that must to be available to all future generations. Veterinarians are recognised public health experts who are dedicated to promoting public health which is greatly impacted by the problem of climate change; hence, it is essential that climate change be seen as falling under the purview of veterinary medicine. By 2050, there will likely be 9.7 billion people on the planet, which will increase demand for animal protein and its by-products. Veterinarians play a critical role in providing adequate safe, high-quality food and enhancing both the health and welfare of people and animals by preventing and controlling animal diseases. By promoting the creation of ethical, responsible and sustainable livestock production systems, they contribute to ensuring that future generations will have access to ample resources. The contribution of veterinary science to sustainable development is highlighted in this chapter.
