Science Communication and Sustainable Development

Scientific development is a symbol of a nation’s prestige and power, impacting everyday life. The societal impact of science and technology (S&T) is substantial, which promotes quality of life by influencing work, communication, infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, etc. As S&T facilitates sustainability through renewable energy, clean technologies, sustainable agriculture, etc., it plays a pivotal role in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, public perception of S&T varies. Some view it as the root cause of environmental degradation, while others trust it for solutions. Effective science communication bridges this gap, making scientific knowledge accessible and encouraging informed decision-making. It also inspires interest, fosters understanding, and empowers individuals for sustainable development. Effective science communication employs various methods including writing, journalism, science centers/museums, festivals, and digital platforms. It enhances scientific literacy, inspires future scientists, builds trust, and enhances societal impact by raising awareness and fostering an inclusive dialogue. Despite its significance, science communication also faces challenges such as complexity, skepticism, and limited training of science communicators. Innovative approaches like citizen science, interactive media, and collaboration can overcome these challenges. Bridging the gap between science and society through effective science communication is vital for a prosperous and sustainable future for all. This article sheds light on importance of scientific literacy and accounts a critical analysis of key principles of effective science communication, its challenges, and innovative approaches.
