Science and Technology (S&T) of Blue Revolution in India in the Backdrop of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS): Role of Aquatic Food System

Science and Technology has significantly played a pivotal role in fish production, productivity, and revenue generation in the fisheries and aquaculture industry. Moreover, in the backdrop of Hill report, India has responded well in launching its mission and achieving its goals in the field of aquaculture. India has significantly produced World Food Prize laureates like Prof. Swaminathan, Father of Green Revolution, being its first recipient in 1986 followed by Dr. Verghese Kurien, in 1989 for White Revolution and then Dr. Modadugu Vijay Gupta in 2005 and Indian origin Dr. Ms. Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted, in 2021 in fisheries. Fish and fish products account for over 17% of the protein consumed globally and implementing sustainable aquaculture is necessary for accomplishing many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Out of 17 Sustainable Development Goals 10 are primarily affecting the aquatic food system. Today India with 1.3 billion mouths to feed, is continuously slipping down in its position in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) and showing no significant improvement in its health and nutritional status, posing a great challenge for the nation. In present circumstances, aquaculture and fisheries seem to be the best alternative to achieve the supplements to food grains therefore the focus should be pertaining to fish nutrition, its production and consumption that too pan India.
