The papermaking industry relies heavily on forests for the raw material wood. In order to preserve forests, the practice of deinking and bleaching (recycling) used paper has become increasingly popular. As conventional chemical deinking processes are harmful to the environment due to the use of toxic chemicals, there is a need for more effective and eco-friendly deinking methods. Enzymatic deinking, with its high efficiency and low environmental impact, is a promising solution that utilizes cellulolytic, hemicellulolytic, and ligninolytic enzymes. During bleaching, the pulp is made more accessible to the chemicals and requires less of them to achieve the same levels of brightness by means of enzymatic action (both singly and in combination) and physical treatment. These processes enhance the pulp’s strength properties and brightness. This analysis details the many options available for recycling paper in a way that has the smallest possible ecological footprint.
