Historical Background of Hexylresorcinol Research

  • Seong-Gon Kim

摘要

This chapter outlines the reasons for investigating 4-hexylresorcinol (4HR). Originally synthesized as an antiseptic, Russian scientists discovered that it could also induce microbial dormancy. Additionally, 4HR has been shown to affect cancer cells in ways like microbial dormancy, leading to increased differentiation and decreased proliferation. The author explores 4HR’s potential use in silk fibroin-based bone grafts and membranes as an antiseptic agent, as well as its potential in treating diabetes mellitus and promoting wound healing. Ultimately, this chapter emphasizes the versatility and minimal off-target effects of chemical chaperones like 4HR, which can have multiple therapeutic targets. Future research should focus on determining optimal therapeutic dosages and investigating the underlying mechanisms of 4HR’s effects.
