摘要

Modern agricultural practices have long relied on chemical inputs, including fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. However, these inputs come at a cost to crop nutritional value and soil health. Overuse of such chemicals has led to environmental degradation, the emergence of weed and disease resistance, and the contamination of food supplies. Furthermore, it has contributed to the accumulation of hazardous substances in soil, exacerbating soil health degradation. In response to these challenges, there is a pressing need for eco-friendly approaches to address the growing concern. Microbial inoculants, functioning as biofertilizers, bioherbicides, biopesticides, and biocontrol agents, offer a promising alternative to chemical inputs. By introducing beneficial microorganisms into soil or plants, the overall health of both soil and crops can be significantly improved. Microbial inoculants play a pivotal role in pest management, consequently contributing to improved human health. Comprising diverse microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and algae, microbial inoculants interact with soil through various mechanisms, effectively reducing the dependency on chemical fertilizers and mitigating their adverse effects. This chapter comprehensively explores the vital role of microbial inoculants in sustaining long-term soil microbial populations and elucidates their distinctive modes of action.
