The Nomoto Model

The Nomoto model is described as a response model. The Nomoto equations are derived from the linear equations of motion in the Abkowitz model and expressions obtained for the Nomoto indices in terms of linear hydrodynamic derivatives. The significance of these indices is explained. Methods are described to determine the first order Nomoto indices from the data of ship manoeuvring trials or model tests. Some empirical methods to estimate these indices are given. A few examples showing how Nomoto indices are used are given.
