摘要

The turning abilityTurning ability of a ship is usually determined through a turning circle manoeuvreTurning circle manoeuvre. This chapter explains how a ship changes its direction of motion through a rudderRudder and the terms associated with the turning circle. The phases of the turning circle are explained by considering the hull, rudder and inertia forces that act on the ship as it turns. The behaviour of the ship during a turn is also explained through the equations of motionEquations of motion and it is shown how an increase in turning ability may result in a decrease in controls fixed stabilityControls fixed stability and vice-versa. There is a description of the heel of a ship and speed lossSpeed loss during a turn. The chapter concludes with an explanation of why the rudderRudder is located at the stern of the ship and not at the bow.
