Research on Common Mental Disorders in Bangladesh

Common mental disorders include depression and anxiety disorders. These conditions are among the leading causes of disability and morbidity worldwide. According to the recent National Mental Health Survey, over 10% of the population of Bangladesh suffers from one of these disorders. In the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the quality and quantity of published research pertaining to CMDs in Bangladesh. The global COVID-19 pandemic provided a further impetus to such efforts. The current chapter reviews the existing research on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of CMDs in Bangladesh, and the ways to surmount them. The quality and quantity of research into CMDs in Bangladesh are also assessed, and the integration of care for CMDs into primary or general health care is discussed.
