Forensic Psychiatry in Bangladesh

Forensic psychiatry, the intersection of psychiatry and the legal system, has gained recognition and importance worldwide. However, it has been a neglected domain in Bangladesh. There is no specialized training in forensic psychiatry in the country even though a high prevalence of mental disorders has been found among the prisoners. There are only 15 inpatient beds in an institute for the whole country. This chapter explores the current status and development of forensic psychiatry services in Bangladesh, a lower middle-income country where the healthcare system undergoing significant transformation. In the context of Bangladesh, the establishment of forensic psychiatry would represent a significant step toward addressing the intricate challenges posed by individuals with mental disorders within the legal framework.
