A Study on Planning of Sustainable Floating Architecture Outside a Bay Utilizing Submerged Breakwater Reef That Sequesters CO2

Sustainability goals in developing coastal projects are often missing of carbon neutrality in them or misleading their carbon offsetting schemes to merely justify short-term economic gains, regardless of the timely necessary establishment of coastal and local carbon sinks following the ‘below 2 °C’ objective of the Paris Agreement of United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change. As one of such potential carbon sink-inspired coastal mitigation projects, multiple near-coastal floating architectures that sequester in situ aqueous CO2 from seawater, and submerged artificial reefs that store precipitated carbonate minerals and provide adequate wave protection to the floating architectures, are designed along the east coast of the Korean Peninsula. In this conceptual planning of an oceanic architecture and near-coastal CCS plant site development, we argue that these ex situ carbon storages managed by permanent boarding communities on the shallow seabed in near-coastal waters but outside any urban bay are plausible coastal development solution of climate mitigation among sustainable coastal communities.
