Conclusion

The chapter critically analyses the findings from case studies on co-supervision in 14 countries across different regions. The analysis focuses on the different approaches and strategies used in co-supervision, emphasising the diverse policies and practices. The chapter delves into various aspects of co-supervision, including the roles of co-supervisor, workload allocations, criteria to be appointed as co-supervisors, recognition of co-supervision, and mentoring and training, while also exploring authorship issues in publications involving co-supervisors, and presenting examples of good practices. Furthermore, the discussion includes an exploration of factors involved in recognising co-supervision, as well as an examination of cultural and disciplinary differences. The case studies reveal that co-supervision is widely embraced while variation exists in its implementation across universities. The chapter emphasises the need for standard implementation, consideration of expertise and diversity, workload allocation guidelines, dedicated support for co-supervisors and recognition of co-supervisors. The findings underscore the importance of addressing challenges and promoting effective co-supervision practices to enhance doctoral candidates’ experiences.
