摘要

While examples of doctoral co-supervision exist in American universities, the system remains embedded in the traditional supervision model. Examples of co-supervision are the exception rather than the rule. This chapter reflects on doctoral co-supervision in American higher education, focusing on policies and guidelines around supervision, examples of co-supervision, and considerations for the future development of co-supervision approaches. The potential exists for advancing doctoral student co-supervision in US degree programs. However, the incentives and rewards for faculty engaging in co-supervision relationships must be more extensive. Given the faculty workload and the small number of full-time tenured faculty at institutions offering the doctorate, it is unlikely that co-supervision will organically evolve in popularity.
