Dermatoscopy: What Does It Add?

Dermatoscopy (epiluminescence microscopy) is a noninvasive modality (using a dermatoscope) that enables the visualization of submacroscopic structures invisible to the naked eye. It acts as a link between naked-eye examination and histopathology. Though initially utilized only for pigmented melanocytic lesions, dermatoscopy has now become an essential tool to assist dermatologists in diagnosing and prognosis various skin, hair, nail, and mucosal disorders. This chapter allows us to elaborate on various aspects of dermatoscopy and its applications in everyday clinical practice: diagnosis, biopsy site selection, prognosis, and procedural dermatology.
