Immune Dysregulation in Skin

The skin resident immune cells act as sentinels protecting the host from distinct inflammatory processes. An intricate network of skin-resident immune cells and non-immune cells exist and their appropriate functioning is extremely crucial for host defense as well as tissue homeostasis. Deregulation of immune responses frequently leads to defective healing and poor tissue restoration and function. Herein we provide an overview of the function of skin-resident immune cells in homeostasis and their role in different skin diseases, mainly autoimmunity, allergy, and infections. Further, we discuss the various therapeutics developed so far targeting skin-resident or skin-homing immune cells and their efficacy in keeping cutaneous inflammation at bay.
