Design and Development of 10 MJ Capacitor Bank Pulsed Power Source for Electromagnetic Railgun

A 10 MJ capacitor-based pulsed power source has been developed and installed at ARDE with an aim to launch projectiles from EM railgun to hypervelocity. The modular pulsed power source developed has been used to generate currents up to 2MA and to launch projectiles of masses up to 500 gm to velocities greater than 2000 m/s. This paper discusses in detail the modular architecture of the 10 MJ capacitor bank installed. The components of the pulsed power system such as energy storage capacitor, switches and pulse shaping inductor are discussed in detail highlighting the specifications, design and selection criteria.
