Targeted Therapy for Neurological Disorders Using Nanomaterial-Based Drug Delivery Vehicle

Globally, neurological disorders possess great impact on human health and social system. The available current medical therapies have increased the survival period. Although insufficient for complete cure of neurological disorders due to biological barriers like blood–brain barrier (BBB), blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier and efflux proteins. In respect to present context, nanomaterials are receiving amazing recognition due to their unique physicochemical properties. The biocompatible nanomaterial based targeted therapies such as gene, dendritic cell, receptor, protein, molecular targeted etc. have shown promising results for the management of neurological disorders. Engineering of nanomaterials to deliver therapeutic agents across blood–brain barrier and specifically to target cells have intensified the hope of cure of neurological disorders. However, short-term and long-term effects of nanomaterials based targeted therapies in humans need to be studied to ensure their safety and potential in clinics. Henceforth, this chapter discusses the various approaches based on targeted therapies using nanomaterials for effective comprehension of their utility in terms of current prospective.
