Nanocarriers and Nano Drug Delivery Therapy in Neuro Diseases

Neurological diseases pose significant challenges in drug delivery due to the complex and delicate nature of the central nervous system (CNS). Nanotechnology has opened up new avenues for targeted drug delivery and therapy in neuro diseases. This book chapter provides a comprehensive overview of nanocarriers and nano-drug delivery therapy in neuro diseases, focusing on their applications, challenges, and prospects. The book chapter's first section explores various nanocarriers, including liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, dendrimers, and carbon-based nanomaterials, highlighting their characteristics and advantages. We discuss how these nanocarriers can overcome the blood–brain barrier and deliver therapeutic agents to specific brain regions affected by neuro diseases. Additionally, the challenges and limitations in nanocarriers development are addressed. The book chapter's next section focuses on nanocarriers’ specific applications in neuro diseases. We examine the role of nanocarriers in delivering therapeutic agents for Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis. Targeted drug delivery approaches and strategies to enhance drug delivery efficacy are discussed in each case. Furthermore, we explore the applications of nanocarriers in neuroimaging, including the use of contrast agents and targeted imaging of specific brain regions. We also highlight the potential of multifunctional nanocarriers for theranostic applications. The safety and regulatory considerations associated with nanocarrier-based therapies are addressed, including the biocompatibility and toxicity of nanocarriers, approaches for evaluating safety and efficacy, and regulatory challenges in their development. This book chapter provides valuable insights into the potential impact of nanocarrier-based therapies in neuro diseases and sets the stage for further research and development in this exciting field.
