Development and Installation of Proportional Counter for Large Area Muon Telescope at GRAPES-3

The GRAPES-3 experiment at Ooty operates 400 nos of plastic scintillator detectors and 3712 proportional counters, the expansion of the GRAPES-3 muon telescope requires additional 3776 nos of proportional counters, each one measuring 600 \(\,\times \,\) 600 \(\,\times \,\) 10 cms. The various fabrication and indigenous test facilities were created at GRAPES-3 along with skill development to perform the precision tasks. The challenge to fabricate a such large number of detectors using old mild steel tubes was accomplished by team members of GRAPES-3. We would be presenting the challenges faced, optimizations, and innovations during the process of fabrication, performance validation, and installation of a large area muon telescope at Ooty.
