Extended reality (XR) are a group of technologies that aim to supplement or complement our sense of the real world with digital information. XR’s applications are rapidly growing and evolving alongside the field of dentistry with most recent implementations of the technology being successfully used for intraoperative guidance, surgical rehearsal, assessment, and immersive collaborative spaces among others. Although the potential for XR in dentistry is vast, there are some key challenges to widespread adoption. This includes cost, ergonomics, hygiene, and data governance. This chapter aims to introduce XR, the underlying technologies, uses, limitations, and current and future trends of the technology within dentistry. The chapter proposes considerations and general recommendations on how these technologies can be integrated with dental education; a plan for progressive exposure to the concepts, risks that comes with XR systems and the steps that should be taken to mitigate the risks. The chapter also proposes assessment techniques and metrics to measure the educational impact of integrating XR into dental education.
