Dental Education and the Industrial Revolution
摘要
This chapter explores the transformative impact of the Industrial Revolution on dentistry, tracing its evolution through successive industrial eras. Beginning in the late 1700s, the Industrial Revolution introduced significant economic and technological advancements, catalyzing shifts in urbanization and society. These changes profoundly influenced dentistry, from the use of rudimentary tools in the preindustrial era to the sophisticated digital technologies of today. Each industrial era contributed to advancements in dental practices and tools, from the steam and waterpower of the first revolution to the mass production and electric power of the second and the computer technology of the third. The Fourth Industrial Revolution integrates digital technologies such as CAD/CAM, digital radiography, 3D scanners, and artificial intelligence, revolutionizing dental diagnostics and treatments. As we transition toward the Fifth Industrial Revolution, the focus shifts to human-centric collaboration, sustainability, and real-time data usage, promising further integration of advanced dental education and practice technologies. This chapter underscores the continuous innovation in dental technology, highlighting the progression from basic tools to advanced digital systems, and emphasizes the importance of adapting dental education to keep pace with these technological advancements, ensuring that future dental professionals are equipped with the skills needed for the modern dental landscape.
