The current climate in dental practice demands graduates who are not only clinically competent but also possess essential soft skills. The competitive nature of the dental market forces employers to seek a proficient dental practitioner who can deliver holistic, patient-centered care armed with well-nurtured soft skills. Even though the epitome of dentistry revolves around the fundamental nature of its technical proficiency, competencies such as communication, empathy, teamwork, adaptability to change, leadership, and problem-solving play a critical role in shaping professional competence, patient satisfaction, and long-term career success. However, integrating a teaching approach and selecting suitable assessment modalities to address these competencies within the dental curriculum remain challenging due to content-heavy programs, limited instructional time to focus on this nuance, and difficulties in measuring affective competencies. This chapter explores the conceptual foundations, pedagogical frameworks, and practical strategies for embedding soft skills into dental education, with particular emphasis on the affective domain of learning across different stages of dental training. It highlights how authentic learning approaches can effectively cultivate interpersonal and professional competencies in future dental practitioners. The chapter further examines the role of soft skills in enhancing employability, professionalism, ethical practice and leadership within dental settings, positioning these competencies as an integral part of workplace readiness and lifelong learning. Challenges related to curriculum design, faculty preparedness and student engagement are discussed, alongside recommendations for addressing these barriers. This discussion advocates a paradigm shift in dental education, emphasizing the human dimensions alongside technical expertise to prepare future-ready dental graduates.
