Basic Medical Sciences in Dental Education

Courses on basic (medical) sciences, such as physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, biochemistry, and microbiology, play a crucial role in dental education. These courses are integrated into the dental curriculum to ensure dentists have a solid background in fundamental sciences. These courses also provide the foundational knowledge and understanding that is necessary for future dentists to diagnose, treat, and prevent oral health issues. In other words, basic medical sciences are essential in dental education since they establish a solid groundwork for comprehending the scientific ideas that form the basis of dentistry. It is to be noted that fundamental research in dentistry has greatly improved the identification and management of dental issues by developing new principles, theories, and essential knowledge. For example, the three major components theory, namely, bacteria-diet-host, has laid the theoretical foundation for preventive measures for most common oral health conditions. Therefore, creating biomedical courses for dentistry students is essential to provide them with a comprehensive education encompassing dental-specific information and more significant scientific concepts. Careful curriculum development and interdisciplinary communication are crucial for developing an efficient educational program. This chapter is aimed to evaluate different basic medical science courses that are offered in dental education. The discussion will be made regarding their relevance, importance, and the most effective method to incorporate those courses in the dental curriculum.
