Nanomaterial-Based Wound Therapy: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

Management of wounds is mostly dependent on the discovery of novel and efficient wound-dressing materials, and it remains a subject of study in chronic wound care. Effective wound healing is a substantial medical concern, and wound care is in high demand. In recent years, wound-dressing material research and development have reached new heights, and there is a much clearer understanding of the physiology of wounds. Nanotechnology provides a superior method for hastening the repair of acute and chronic wounds by accelerating appropriate movement during the various healing phases. Different nanomaterials, nanoscaffolds, and nanofibers are utilized in nanotechnology for the topical management of wounds. The past years have witnessed rapid progress in the application of nanomaterials for clinical and pharmacological fields. As a result, a significant portion of nanomaterials are employed in diverse biomedical applications such as dressings for wounds, drug administration, and other medicinal functions. In this chapter, we have discussed an outline of wound infection, its types, pathophysiology, and mechanism of wound-healing and conventional wound therapies. Furthermore, the chapter highlights and critically evaluates the use of different nanomaterials for wound therapy and the recent breakthroughs in the application of nanomaterials in biomedical applications. Finally, we summarize the recent findings concerning the challenges and prospects of the use of nanomaterials for the management of chronic wounds.
