Recent Advancements of Public Edge Platforms

Public edge platforms have drawn increasing attention from both academia and industry. This chapter performs the first measurement study on the leading public edge platform of China. Through this measurement, two critical yet unexplored questions are answered quantitatively: (1) From end users’ perspective, how is the performance of public edge platforms compared to public clouds considering the performance metrics such as end-to-end network delay, throughput, and application QoE? (2) From edge service provider’s perspective, how are the edge workloads different from cloud with respect to VM subscription and resource usage. This chapter quantitatively reveals the status quo of today’s public edge platforms and provides crucial insights toward developing and operating future edge services.
