Delivery of Drugs and Vaccines Through Plant Molecular Farming
摘要
Plant molecular farming is based on the genetic transformation of plants through molecular technologies, including gene transfer using viral vectors and the use of nucleus, transient and chloroplast genetic modification. Plant molecular farming may supplement or even substitute conventional expression systems based on microbial, mammalian and insect cell lines which are typically costly. Plant-based expression systems are cost-effective, scalable and adaptable and therefore accepted worldwide. Despite the growing interest in plant molecular farming and its undeniable potential for manufacturing biopharmaceutical drugs, there are concerns regarding biosecurity and public acceptability of biopharmaceutical products. We therefore review the production of recombinant proteins, including vaccines through plant-based expression systems and concerns about the implementation of plant molecular farming, uptake of biopharmaceuticals and biosafety.
