Are Multi-Component Drugs Better in Resolving the Inflammation Compared to the Single-Component Drugs?
摘要
As the cost of developing novel single-component drugs is always increasing, multi-component drugs could be seen as a solution. Diseases often affect multiple intertwined metabolic pathways: targeting only one element of such complex systems may not always be the most efficient way to resolve the disease. Multi-targeting can lead to synergistic effects. Therefore, multi-component multi-target drugs can have achieved higher effects compared to the same dose of each component separately. This can be viewed as an opportunity for drug repurposing: drugs showed to have low effect on a disease phenotype when taken alone could benefit from synergistic effects when taken in combination with other drugs. This combination would therefore be a new potential treatment candidate for the disease. In this chapter, we discuss in detail about the single-component, single-target drugs with multi-component, and multi-target drugs in the resolution of inflammation.
