Inflammation serves as a vital protective mechanism within the human body, contributing to the facilitation of the healing process. It can be triggered by a diverse range of factors, including pathogens, cellular disruption, and exposure to toxic substances. The immune system orchestrates a complex array of responses upon detecting damage or invading pathogens. These responses encompass the accumulation of plasma proteins within tissues, leading to edema or localized swelling. Furthermore, neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, are mobilized by the body and directed toward the site of injury. In addition, leukocytes, which harbor pathogen-fighting agents, and plasma proteins gain improved access to the afflicted area due to the expansion of microvascular networks. Inflammatory reactions can manifest in various organs and organ systems, such as the liver, pancreas, heart, brain, lungs, kidney, digestive tract, and reproductive system. These reactions can evolve in acute or chronic states, potentially resulting in tissue damage or the development of various diseases. Key microcirculatory events that transpire during the inflammatory phase encompass alterations in vascular permeability, the recruitment and accumulation of leukocytes, and the release of inflammatory mediators. Both infectious and non-infectious stimuli, as well as cellular injury, serve as activators for inflammatory cells. These stimuli trigger complex signaling pathways associated with inflammation, notably the NF-κB, MAPK, and JAK-STAT pathways.
