Comparative Study of Conventional Sliding Mode Control and Sliding Mode with Integral Action in an Electric Vehicle Charger Application

The charging unit is one of the main subsystems of electric vehicles, it allows the interconnection between the vehicle and the charging system. The charging system consists of two power stages, an AC-DC rectifier on the grid side and a DC-DC converter on the battery side. Due to the non-linearity of these power converters, non-linear controls are required to obtain various objectives such as DC-bus voltage regulation and power factor correction. In this way, a sliding mode controller (SMC) are designed to achieve these goals. In this work, a comparative study was carried out between two types of sliding mode control, namely conventional sliding-mode control (CSMC) and sliding mode control with integral action (ISMC), including the PI linear controller. The proposed controllers have been simulated on MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of ISMC compared to CSMC and PI control.
