Development of Motion Sickness between Predictable and Unpredictable Motion in an Automated Vehicle

The anticipation of moving motion was known to affect the rate of motion sickness, as past studies suggested using simulation and virtual setup. Past researchers found that the person who controls or anticipates the motion faced significantly lower motion sickness than the person who passively anticipates. Besides, the engagement in non-driving related activities inside the automated vehicle can also be related to lowering the anticipation in vehicle motion. However, a test must be done on the road to relate the anticipation of vehicle motion and the level of motion sickness. This study used an automated vehicle simulation to investigate the motion sickness level between predictable and unpredictable motion on real roads. A total of 12 participants took part in this study, and the results from various data and analyses suggest that the unpredictable motion significantly produced more significant motion sickness symptoms compared to the predictable motion. The importance of anticipation in vehicle motion in producing comfort among automated vehicle passengers must be addressed carefully by developers as it may create significant drawbacks of having the technology.
