The Gulf oil-producing countries rely heavily on migrant workers, making nationals a minority in their own lands. Kuwaiti women, despite being highly educated, are underutilized in the private sector. Data from mid-2023 show that 57.9% of female nationals were employed, the highest ratio in the Gulf region. However, barriers such as patriarchal policies, early retirement, and homemaker allowances hinder their integration into the private sector. Gendered laws and socio-cultural norms also pose challenges. Removing these obstacles could lead to a more productive and socially compatible labour market, reducing dependence on migrant labour and achieving sustainable development goals. Promoting gender equality in the economy will increase productivity and national representation in the private sector. The government’s Kuwait National Development Plan aims to encourage women’s inclusion in the economy and promote a diverse, vibrant private sector. By addressing these issues, Kuwait can improve its global ranking in gender equality and economic opportunity.
