The Dawn of Humanistic Care in the Western Regions: The World’s Earliest Prosthetic Limb Unearthed in Turpan

The Shengjindian Cemetery is situated in the southern outskirts of Shengjindian Village, Shengjin Township, Turpan City, Xinjiang Province, approximately 40 kilometers west of Turpan City. To facilitate the construction of the Turpan-Shanshan section of the 312 National Highway, the Archaeological Institute of the Turpan Academy of Studies organized a team of professionals to carry out an excavation project in October 2007. A total of 31 tombs were excavated, and numerous significant cultural relics, including prosthetic limbs, were unearthed.
