Promoter Regulatory Regions of Abiotic Stress Responses

Promoters are the connecting link between perceiving of the environmental changes/stress and the triggered-gene expression. Plants are highly dependent on these switch-like sequences because they greatly facilitate rapid adjustability and dynamic environmental adaption to the non-locomotive plants. Promoters recognize external signals via stress-responsive transcription factors (TFs), noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), and epigenetic chemical changes of DNA/histones. These factors have binding sites on/near the promoters. All these factors work in coordination to drive the promoter to facilitate dynamic regulation of various genes, with the intention for providing optimum survival conditions. Also, the promoters of gene encoding these regulatory factors (TFs, and ncRNAs) are also in turn regulated by the same mechanism, thereby indicating the occurrence of complex networks of pathways. Abiotic stresses trigger the expression of many of these regulatory factors. Various abiotic stress-responsive TF families, and reports on abiotic-stress-induced ncRNAs and other epigenetic modifications in plants are discussed in this chapter. Transgenerational epigenetic changes due to abiotic stresses are also described. Recent high throughput information on genome, transcriptome, and epigenome sequencing in multiple plants demands efficient bioinformatics analysis, aided by artificial intelligence, to dig out maximum information. Deeper understanding of the complex regulatory webs is required to find reliable solutions to mitigate abiotic stress-induced damages in plants. This would aid in developing desirable synthetic promoters, overexpression strategies, and genome/epigenome editing in plants.
