Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

In the early stage of fuel cell development, alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) received much attention. AFCs have the highest efficiency (up to 70%) compared to other types of fuel cells (Arges et al. in Electrochem Soc Interface 19:31–35, 2010). They can provide electricity for the equipment on the one hand, and the reaction products can also provide drinking water on the other. So, in 1960, AFCs were introduced into NASA’s space program. But AFCs used liquid electrolytes that were sensitive to carbon dioxide, making them prone to side effects. When air is used as an oxidant, hydroxide ions react with carbon dioxide to form carbonate deposits, which can degrade cell performance or even block the fuel cell. In addition, liquid electrolytes may leak, endangering equipment safety.
